Join The Hektoen International Writing Contest And Win $3000
It might be a long shot for a Filipino writer to win in this writing competition but it's still worth a try. If you win, great. If you don't, just take your essay somewhere else. Publish it in your blog or sell it to a magazine or newspaper who might be interested in publishing it.
This writing contest is called the Hektoen International Grand Prix Essay Competition. It's hosted by Hektoen International, a journal that "features articles on the medical humanities from a wide spectrum of global and cultural perspectives as they relate to health and healing". The journal was founded in 2008 and was named in honor of Ludvig Hektoen, a distinguished professor of pathology at the University of Chicago.
There are two prizes at stake. The winner will receive $3000 and a runner-up will pocket $800. Not bad. Not bad at all. If you win, you will be 150,000 pesos richer (3000 x 50). You can check out the works of previous winners here. Most of the winners are from the United States, Canada, and Ireland. But if you have the writing chops, there's no reason why you can't compete with writers from these regions.
Your essay should be under 1600 words and it should cover topics that might include art, history, literature, and education as they relate to medicine. Keep in mind that Hektoen International is a journal on medical humanities. The deadline for submissions has been set on April 15, 2019. For the complete information about contest guidelines and rules, visit this page.
All of the winning pieces in previous editions of the contest are available on the Hektoen International website so you should take the time to read these. They should be able to help you understand the type of essays that have better chances of winning.
